Have some pride; Belvidere North was Nationally ranked as a Bronze medal High School. What that means is that the 12th-graders of 2009-2010 school year performed better than statistically expected. That also includes the economically disadvantaged students who normally don’t exceed the standards. It also means that North is doing a good job on preparing students for college. Since not every student at North is college bound Mr. Marc Eckmann, principal of North, hopes to incorporate more of the career and college readiness skills into the standard curriculum. He wants to make sure that all of the concepts and skills are taught to each and every student. As far as being Nationally Recognized by the U.S. News & World Report’s list of America’s best high schools, Eckmann couldn’t be happier, “It’s wonderful(being recognized), it shows the hard work we do here, “ said Eckmann.

Every year at Harlem High School, the Special Olympics is held to encourage kids of all ages with special needs to get up, get out and have some fun. On May 5, the games begin once again, with track, softball and soccer events being held as entertainment.

“Everyone seems to enjoy the fun and games,” said Tory Darling (’13) who has attended the event in the past.

Of the thousands of people who participate, nearly all seem to enjoy the time spent playing in each event. It’s a great time to get off the couch and be physically active.

Matt Stiles’ (’15) grandfather, Andre Girod, came to Mr. Geary’s sixth and seventh hour classes on April 13 to talk to students about World War II.

When students entered Mr. Geary’s classroom they knew their lesson would be different. When the bell rang, Girod went to the front of the class and introduced himself. Girod grew up in France and has come over for a visit. He was a child during World War II, born in 1935.

“I want to give you an idea of what history was really like,” said Girod.

He started by telling the class about 1943, when France was being bombed and they were preparing for D-Day. Girod remembers going to school and hearing the alarms go off.

“Teachers would rush us down to the basement. We would bring candles in case we lost electricity,” said Girod. “As a child, we had no idea what was going on.”

The first thing Girod remembers about the war was the food. The Germans took all of the food. The shelves in the stores were empty. Each family was given food tickets allowing them only half a pound of meat and a pint of milk a week.

“You had to go in stores when there was food. Then you would fight for a spot in line.”

The second thing he remembered was the cold weather. He lived in the 20th district of Paris North East.

“1941 was a very cold winter in Paris,” Girod said. “I remember coming home with coal and my mother was so happy.”

Another thing Girod remembers about the war was the Jews. Girod’s two best friends when he was 8 years old were Jews. In July of 1942, the French rounded up the Jews in his district.

“I remember asking my mom, ‘Do you think the policemen knew where they were taking the Jews?’” said Girod.

According to Girod, all of the Jews in his class disappeared, and never came back.

Girod’s grandparents lived in Chancia near Jura Mountain, a very peaceful place only 30 miles from Switzerland. When the Germans sent reinforcements they lost three German soldiers so they decided to burn down three villages. The village of Girod’s grandparents was the first to be burned down.

“My grandparents left to the mountains,” said Girod.

Girod also pulled up photos of when he was a kid. He showed the class pictures of the school he went to, the town of Chancia, and his class, which had five missing Jewish students.

“His stories were amazing. I wouldn’t mind listening to them all day,” said Caitlin Wendt (’15).

The German Honor Society, like other clubs, is very active in the community in order to raise money for themselves and other causes.

Mrs. Kelly Kristensen and the members of the honor society recently took part in a book fair fundraiser at Barnes and Noble on April 6. One member of the German Honor Society, Olivia Cacciatore (’13), said, “It was a good way to raise money and have the opportunity to work with kids at the same time.”

Members have also been selling lollipops as a part of their fundraising, and it seems to be going well so far. The German Honor Society is looking to end the year strong and continue to grow in years to come.
